Capturing a moving image and sound

A window will open.

Give your movie a name and let the computer
save it to the
Movies
folder.
Click
Create.
The main iMovie window will open.

Switch to Camera View by clicking this button.
You will see an image in the window, (probably
yourself!)

To begin recording, click this button.

It will turn blue.

To stop recording press this button again.
The recording clip which you have just made
will appear in the Clip sorter.

Instant viewing
To replay your clip,
click on it once to highlight it blue.
Click the play button
from this set of buttons.
Rewind and re-filming
This button will play your clip in Full Screen Mode.
To return to iMovie press esc. on your keyboard. (top left).
To delete the clip, click on it once to highlight it blue.

Press the
delete
key on your keyboard. The clip will vanish from
the clip sorter.
NOTE: The deleted clip has gone to the iMovie
trash.

This trash fills up with all the clips you
delete from iMovie and has to be deleted by
going to File and selecting Empty Trash.

You will be given an alert, which will also
enable you to save your project.

Note that the trash is now empty after this
process.

Simple editing - Sequencing Clips
Click the Clip Viewer
Button
Drag clips from the Clips Pane
to the Clip viewer.
To rearrange the sequence of clips, drag the
clips to create the desired order.
Simple editing - Adding Music
Drag the playhead
to the point where you want the music to start.
Click the Media
Button.
Then click Audio.
Choose a piece of
music from iTunes (or Garageband if you have
composed your own piece of music!)
Click Place at
Playhead Button.
You will see the
audio track in place below the video track.
Simple Editing - Adding a voiceover
Click Media.
Click Audio.
Drag the playhead to the point in your timeline
where you want the audio to play.
Click the Record button.
Speak clearly.
Click the button again to stop recording.
The Audio clip will appear in the Timeline.
Playback your movie
To go to the start of
the movie click this button.
Click the Play
button.
To view Full
Screen, click this button.
To exit Full
Screen, hit the Escape key on your keyboard.
Saving Movies for Web or Glow
Select Quicktime from the drop-down menu.
Choose Web from the Compress Movie menu
Click Share.
Give your movie a
name, decide where you wish to save it to and
click Save.
Advanced editing - Splitting clips
Select the timeline
viewer.
Click once on the clip you wish to split.
Move the playhead
to the point where you want to divide the clip.
Go to Edit and
select Split Video Clip at Playhead.
Notice that the
clip has now been split into two.
You can use
this technique to split clips and delete
unwanted sections.
Select the piece you wish to delete.
Hit Backspace on
your keyboard.
NOTE!
Anything you delete from your iMovie project is
sent to iMovie Trash.

This must be emptied periodically otherwise it
will use up valuable space on your computer.
Go to File and
select Empty Trash.
You will be asked
if you are sure. Click Empty Trash and save
project.
Notice that the
iMovie trash is now empty.

Advanced editing - Transitions
Click the Editing
Button.
Click the
Transitions Button.
Choose a transition
from the list.
You will see a
preview of the transition in the iMovie
monitor.
Set the duration of the transition using the
Speed Slider.
Drag the transition from the
the list to the timeline.
Advanced editing - Effects
Click on the clip to
which you wish to add an effect.
Click the Editing
Button.
Click the Video FX
button.
Choose an effect
from the list.
You will see a
preview of the effect in the iMovie monitor.
Make any adjustments to your effect.
Click Apply.
Advanced editing - Splitting Music Clips
Select the timeline
viewer.
Click once on the audio clip you wish to split
or trim.
Move the playhead
to the point where you want to split the clip.
Go to Edit and
select Split Selected Audio Clip at Playhead.
Notice that the
clip has now been split into two.
You can use
this technique to split clips and delete or
trim unwanted sections.
Advanced editing - Adjusting Audio Volume
Go to View at the top of the screen and select
Show Clip Volume Levels.
Click at a point
where you want the volume to change.
Then drag the marker up or down to change the
volume.
Advanced editing - Adding Titles/Text
Move the playhead to the point where you want
the title to start.

Click the Editing Button.

Click the Titles Button.

Select a Style from the list.
Make any changes to
the settings using the available controls.
Type your text into
the text boxes.
Click the Add button
If you want your
text to appear over a black background, rather
than over the clip, check the Over Black box.
This will put your Titles at the start
of a clip.
Burning a DVD
Save your completed iMovie project,
(remembering where you have saved it).

Quit
iMovie.
Open iDVD.
Select
‘Create a New Project’ from
the options on the screen.

Give your
project a name and decide where you want to
save the project.

Click
Create.
A window giving you the option to
create a DVD menu will appear.

Just ignore
this window for the time being.
Go to File and select
One Step DVD from Movie.

Select
your iMovie project. In the window which opens.
Click
Import.
You will be asked if you wish to save
the existing project.
Click
Don’t Save.

You will now be
asked to insert a recordable DVD.

A window showing
the progress of the process will appear.
(Depending on the amount of footage, this can
take a bit of time).

When the process is
complete, you will see this message:

You can eject the disc and use it in a DVD player.
