On the address bar, type in the address for a website.

On the iGear Login page, you will be prompted for your username and password.

Once login is complete, the page you requested will load. This may take some time, depending on the speed of your connection and the size of the page.

Browser - Retracing Your Steps

Use the back and forward buttons to go back to previously visited pages.

Click the SnapBack button to return to the point where you last entered a URL or selected a bookmark.

If this is your first browsing session of the day, it will probably take you back to your iGear Log In page.

Use the forward button to move to the web page.

Browser - Reloading a Page

To reload the current page or to get the most up-to-date version, for example, if a page is continually being updated. Click the Reload button.

Searching - Using the Searchbar

Click in the Search Bar.

Type the phrase. Your typing replaces any text currently in the search bar.

Hit
Enter or Return to search.

Your results will be displayed on a new page.

Searching - Using a Search Engine

Type the address of your Search Engine in the address bar, e.g. http://www.ask.com

When the Search Engine page opens, type your request in the box and click, ‘Search’.

You are usually given the option of narrowing your search to just images, news etc.

Bookmarks - Using the Bookmarks Toolbar

To bookmark a webpage, open the page, and then choose Add Bookmark from the Bookmarks menu at the top of the screen.

You will be asked to name your bookmark and where you wish to place it.

If you choose Bookmark Menu, you will be able to access it from a sidebar menu.

If you choose Bookmarks Bar, you will be able to access it from the toolbar below the address box.

You can also drag the address from the
Address bar to the Bookmark bar.

Drag the little icon which appears just before the actual address

and drop it anywhere into the Bookmark bar.

You will be asked for a name for the bookmark.

Change or Edit the bookmark name and click OK.

Bookmarks - Using the Sidebar

Click on the ‘Show all Bookmarks’ button.

The window will change to show your bookmarks directory.

From this page you can move, rename and organise your bookmarks.


You can create new folders to store bookmarks with a common theme, or for a particular group of children.

Click on the New Folder icon

and give your folder a name.

Save bookmarks to the new folder or move bookmarks there at a later date.

Saving a Page

Go to File and select Save As…

Give the file a name and click Save.

This will save a copy of the web page to your computer.

Go to File and select Print.

Your normal Print Dialogue box will open. Click Print.

RSS - Obtaining a Reader

RSS - What is it?

Really Simple Syndication is a way of allowing you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in.

You
save time by not needing to visit each site individually as content is fed to users who wish it, automatically.

What do I need?

A Feed Reader or News Aggregator will allow you to grab the RSS feeds from various sites and display them for you to read and use.

There are a number of web-based feed readers available. E.g.
Bloglines, Netvibes, Google Reader.

Obtaining a Free Reader.

Enter the web address of the reader you are going to use. E.g. Bloglines into the Address Box and press return.

You will be taken to the Homepage where you can register for the service.

Complete the details on the page and click register.

Once registered, a validation email is sent to you. When you reply to that, your account will be validated.

When you go to the homepage, you can now Log In.

RSS - Subscribing to Feeds

To add a feed click Add.

Enter the URL (web address) in the box and Click Subscribe.

Choose which, or all of the available feeds you wish to subscribe to.

Select any options you may have and click
Subscribe.

The Feeds appear in the sidebar.

Unread feeds will appear in Bold.

Clicking on the text will reveal all the updates.

Social Bookmarking - Del.icio.us

del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website – Use it to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too.

Type http://del.icio.us/ into you address box.

The next page will ask you to drag two buttons to your Bookmarks bar.
